day tripping

Not all wine tastings are created equal... and we recently got to roll out a pretty epic day of wine tasting - if I can say so myself. We took a group of wine enthusiasts to a few beautiful settings, to try wines in the vineyards where they started as grapes.

The day started with coffees and pastries on the way to a sunrise braai on the Paardeberg, tasting David & Nadia's Pinotage with farm boerewors straight from the fire.

From there drove around the mountain to the west side to a old bushvine block aptly named Sky (where Andre Bruyns picks for his City on a Hill Chenin Blanc) and went slightly 4x4 to where Lukas van Loggerenberg sources a component of his Trust Your Gut Chenin Blanc. 

Then it was off to the Kasteelberg, to a spot on Kloovenburg where two vineyards meet - one harvested by Donovan Rall and the other by Francois Haasbroek of Blackwater Wines.

At each stop the wines were paired with a snack and the tour ended with a lazy family style lunch at Riebeek Kasteel’s popular Mama Cucina.

The main event for the day was still to come though - that evening Marvel Bistro played host to a very special dinner by the Di Tarantos, an Italian family of chefs and sommeliers, at Bill&Co Swartland Street Market

The event was dreamt up by the five winemakers mentioned above, who all work with Elvama as their importer to Belgium. It started at The Jane in Antwerp where a few of them were blown away by the experience of the two Michelin stared restaurant, set in an old chapel.


Gianluca Di Taranto is the man in charge of service at The Jane. When word got out that Belgium’s Sommelier of the Year and family, including his father Francesco (Michelin starred head chef and owner of Spiga d’Oro) would be traveling to South Africa in March 2019, the winemakers approached them with the idea of a unique experience.

Besides the fantastic food, quality ingredients, on point pairings and fine dining presentation everyone loved how the entire family worked together. Behind father and son was a mother leading the integrate plating process in the kitchen and Gianluca’s wife and sister, both sommeliers, serving guests with a level of professionalism and attention to detail that few had seen before.
